Fire Mesa's Counseling Program during the COVID-19 Pandemic
Even though school will look very different than we are used to for a good part of this year, we are dedicated to providing the same services and supports to our students and families at Fire Mesa.
We will be available to meet with students individually, hold small group counseling sessions, and will be providing social-emotional lessons to all of our students. In addition to this, we are available to meet with parents to discuss concerns about their children's academic, social, or emotional well-being.
Further information about all of these topics can be found below.

Individual Counseling
Students can meet with a school counselor by self-referral, teacher or parent request. During individual meetings the counselor can help students understand and accept themselves, cope with family changes/or family crises, and develop decision making skills, conflict resolution skills, anger management techniques, and problem solving strategies.
During virtual learning, we will be meeting with students via Zoom.
Parents and students can use any of the avenues below to contact us. Please allow 24 hours for us to respond to you. If it is an emergency and you cannot wait 24 hours for a response, call 911 for immediate assistance.

Group Counseling
Throughout the school year, students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade may be invited to participate in a small group. The small group experience is an enjoyable way for students to benefit from personal growth as well as to gain support from peers with similar situations/experiences. Group arrangements are typically made through counselor, parent and teacher referrals. The small groups usually will meet once a week for approximately six weeks. Small group topics may vary and may be created based on students need.
Topics may include (but are not limited to):
During COVID-19, groups will take place via Zoom. In order for a student to participate, parents and students will need to agree to the virtual group guidelines that will be emailed to you. This will ensure the confidentiality of all members of the group.
We will reach out for group interest once the topics are decided for the year.
Topics may include (but are not limited to):
- Confidence building
- Friendship/Social Skills
- Changing families/Divorce

Classroom Lessons
Typically, we go into each elementary classroom once a month and talk to our upper school students a few times a year to deliver lessons around social/emotional topics (such as bullying, self-esteem, tolerance, etc.). We will continue this during virtual learning by going into Zoom meetings and delivering live lessons directly to the students. You can expect lessons from us once a month for each grade level.
Newsletters
We will be sending out biweekly newsletters with resources, links to our lessons, family engagement activities, and other important information.
